Robert F. Gagel, M.D. Community Leadership Award

The Robert F. Gagel, M.D. Community Leadership Award recognizes a healthcare professional who has demonstrated exceptional success in improving the care of people living with osteoporosis and in raising community awareness about bone health. The award will be presented annually to a healthcare professional residing and working in the United States or its territories. In 2024, the nomination period will be open from April 19-May 15. In future years, the nominations will be accepted during the three-month period prior to the award; the Executive Committee of the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation’s (BHOF’s) Board of Trustees will make the final selection. The award winner will be notified and announced publicly in May during Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month. The winner will receive a plaque and a financial award (currently $1,000) to support implementation of community service efforts.

Award Criteria

  • Must be a licensed and credentialed healthcare provider who participates in the treatment of osteoporosis patients at least 25% of the time, or an individual who has developed clinical care models that enhance the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis

  • Appropriate individuals could include a medical doctor, a doctor of osteopathy, an individual with a Ph.D., a registered dietician, a physical therapist, a physician assistant, a nurse practitioner, or an exercise trainer

  • Must have a minimum of five years of medical practice or professional experience

  • Must demonstrate a strong commitment to continuing professional development in the fields of bone and/or musculoskeletal health

  • Must demonstrate a positive impact on raising awareness and educating the local community about osteoporosis and bone health
